The highlight of these new limited editions lies in their dials. Produced from washi paper, a traditional Japanese material known for its use in paper screens that diffuse natural light, the dials exude a unique charm. The partially translucent nature of washi paper allows light to pass through, powering the solar eco-drive movement. Citizen has previously utilized this material in a few models, including a previous limited edition.
The fibrous texture of the paper is visible on the two gradient dials, creating delicate shifts in color. Furthermore, the flexibility of the material allows for specific patterns to be shaped. The first limited edition, ref. AQ4100-22W, features a teal dial adorned with overlapping circles. These circles form pointed oval shapes reminiscent of summer flower petals.
The second limited edition, ref. AQ4106-00W, boasts a brown dial with a striated pattern of lines radiating from the center to the 7-minute and 53-minute markers. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that the patterned areas align perfectly with the wings of the eagle insignia at 6 o'clock. Each line in the washi paper represents the feathers of the bird.
Beyond the captivating dials, both references feature 38.3mm diameter cases made from Citizen's Super Titanium, a durable version of the lightweight metal. The cases are coated with Duratect, with one version in platinum color and the other in Sakura pink. The design of the case includes a wide, smooth bezel and faceted lugs that seamlessly transition into sustainably sourced crocodile leather straps.
Inside these timepieces beats the calibre A060 eco-drive movement, Citizen's advanced solar-powered quartz movement. With exceptional accuracy and an infinite power reserve as long as it is exposed to light, this movement is a testament to Citizen's innovation. Additionally, the date function automatically adjusts for shorter months and leap years, requiring no manual adjustment until the year 2100.
The Citizen Iconic Nature Collection with washi dial limited editions are not easily attainable. Limited to 300 pieces each, the ref. AQ4100-22W and ref. AQ4106-00W exude exclusivity, even by Citizen's standards. However, they serve as a testament to the unmatched craftsmanship of Japanese watchmaking, particularly when it comes to nature-inspired dials.
